What is the general amount of levelling agent added?
The amount of levelling agent added usually varies according to the type of coating, formula, construction technology and specific requirements for levelling effect, generally around 0.1% to 1% of the total amount of coating, the following is the approximate range of the amount of levelling agent added in some common coatings:
Solvent based coatings
Acrylic coatings: the usual addition amount is between 0.3% and 0.8%. If the requirements for surface levelling effect are higher, such as for high-grade furniture, automobile refinishing paints, etc., the additive amount may be close to 0.8%; for general industrial acrylic coatings, the additive amount of about 0.3% to 0.5% can meet the basic levelling requirements.
Alkyd paint: the addition amount is generally 0.2% to 0.6%. Ordinary alkyd paints are used for building doors and windows, metal protection, etc., the additive amount is about 0.2% to 0.4%; for some special alkyd paints that need better levelling, such as alkyd varnish used for painting the surface of musical instruments, the additive amount may be increased to 0.4% to 0.6%.
Polyurethane coatings: the amount of levelling agent added is usually around 0.5% to 1%. In high-grade two-component polyurethane wood coatings, in order to obtain excellent levelling effect and mirror gloss, the levelling agent addition may reach about 1%, while the general polyurethane industrial coatings add between 0.5% and 0.8%.
Waterborne Coatings
Waterborne acrylic emulsion coatings: the amount of levelling agent added is generally 0.1% to 0.5%. For ordinary water-based interior wall coatings, the addition amount of 0.1% to 0.3% can achieve a good levelling effect; for some water-based elastic coatings for exterior walls with higher requirements on appearance, the addition amount may be increased to 0.3% to 0.5%.
Water-based epoxy coating: the amount of addition is usually 0.3% to 0.8%. In water-based epoxy floor paint, in order to ensure the flatness and gloss of the ground coating film, the levelling agent is generally added at 0.5% to 0.8%; while for water-based epoxy anticorrosion coatings, the amount of additive is about 0.3% to 0.6%.
Powder Coatings
Pure polyester powder coatings: the levelling agent addition is generally around 0.5% to 1%. In powder coatings for outdoor architectural aluminium profiles, the levelling agent additive may reach about 1% in order to obtain good levelling effect and weather resistance; for some common pure polyester powder coatings for indoor use, the additive level is between 0.5% and 0.8%.
Epoxy-polyester powder coatings: Usually 0.3% to 0.8%. For general household appliance shell powder coatings, the additive amount of 0.3% to 0.6% can meet the requirements; for some electronic product shell powder coatings with higher requirements on appearance quality, the additive amount may be increased to 0.6% to 0.8%.
